I sold one that was probably 15 years old for $50 a few years ago. The firebox and the cooker itself will crack but it doesn't effect the cooking, or at least it didn't bother mine. The metal bands hold them together. There is some masonry glue available at hardware stores that will repair the fireboxes. I would imagine that the fireboxes would be interchangeable with the old and new models too.

I am the proud owner of a large and small of the new version that I'm very happy with but the small is really a luxury, I do most of the cooking on the large.
