The kamado shape is over 3000 years old and the present day cookers are most identified with the mushikamado that was and still is used to cook/steam rice. The kamado became popular in the US after WWII when service men brought the clay cookers home after the war. The draw back to these cookers is they were made of clay and would easily crack if the temps were to high thus the evolution to the ceramic materials. This is a very very breif history. To bad the Japanese didn't have those big arse casters to move their cookers around with ;)
