So I tried the Bayou classic this past weekend. I haven't cooked with lump charcoal before and haven't even used real charcoal in ages, so I'm not he best judge of the efficiency of the grill.
I used three hand full of charcoal and once it was heated up the temperature was 350 at the grill and registered 300 on the built in thermostat. It wasn't hot enough to sear the meat, but the flavor was good and the meat was tender. I think next time I will have to take out one of the insert to lower the grill surface as I don't want to have to use too much charcoal for a small meal.
I will post some detailed pictures of the grill. My biggest complaint at the moment is the lousy third rate metal work on the cast iron vent top and fasteners. The stand/cart is a very heavy gauge steel. The quality of the paint and finish work on the grill itself is not what I expected for the money. There are slight bubbles and pin holes in the outer glaze. The glaze has some runs in it, and there were ceramic chips on the lip of the bowl and a big chip on the base of the fire bowl insert.
At the moment I would say compared to a Weber grill, $300-$400 would be a fair price, but I wouldn't pay $600 for it. All said and done I guess the $479 I got it for was just around fair market.
